Don’t let the phrase, “we’re bored!” burn a hole in your wallet this summer. Here are nine free or low-cost activities that will keep the family entertained:
1. Check out a museum for free
Get into the Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum free on the first Friday of every month, and every Sunday from 9am-1pm (except during Balloon Fiesta). Note: many museums offer free days. Just google “Free Museum Day” and your city’s name.
2. Let the kids bowl free
At Silver Lanes in Albuquerque and Tenpins & More in Rio Rancho, your kids can get two free games daily all summer by signing up at Kids Bowl Free.
3. Go for a hike
New Mexico is blessed with exciting and beautiful outdoor escapes, many of which may only be a short drive from your home. It’s great exercise and it’s free.
4. Or hop on a bike
The family that hikes together can also bike together. It’s great exercise and you can cover more ground on two wheels than two feet.
5. Chalk up your driveway
Use multi-colored, washable chalk to decorate your driveway or sidewalk (pro-tip: invite your neighbors to increase canvas space).
6. Sign your kids up for Apple Camp
Mac lovers, this one’s for you. Apple retail stores offer Apple Camp, where kids 8 to 12 can learn to make a movie or interactive book. The best part: it’s free. Registration for Summer 2015 isn’t open yet, but you can sign up here to be notified when it is.
7. Then take them to a real camp
Whether it’s in the Santa Fe National Forest or your own backyard, it’s fun to sleep under the New Mexico stars.
8. Get your glow on
For after hours fun, check out the IFAM Glow Party in the Santa Fe Railyard on August 19, 2015. Cover is $5.
