SAVE MONEY ON CHRISTMAS SHOPPING

SAVE MONEY ON CHRISTMAS SHOPPING

Christmas is less than two months away! And while that has young children everywhere jumping for joy, parents may be stressing out about how they are going to come up with the cash for all those toys and goodies. But there are definitely some easy and effective ways to save money on Christmas shopping.

Look for coupons

Many big-box stores and toy stores send out Christmas catalogues as early as October. In fact, I recently received one from Target and it included multiple coupons for specific toys, but also a $5 off $50 toy purchase. I bought the first round of my kids’ Christmas gifts and saved about $40!

Use layaway

Wal-Mart is one store offering free layaway this year. Layaway allows you to gather everything you want to buy for the holiday season. You pay a down payment on the total amount and the store holds those items for you, while you make payments on the total amount.

Buy used

You can find many items, especially electronics or bigger toys that are in great condition. You can shop at toy resale shops, on Craigslist, or ebay.

Shop sales

Black Friday is a few weeks away and you can take advantage of big mark downs and special prices. Also check online and in newspaper ads before you make your purchases to make sure you get the lowest available price. You can also use money-saving apps, such as Compare Me, which compares prices and products and helps you find the best deals at various retailers.

Skip the things that are “expected” of you

Christmas cards, fancy wrapping, and shiny decorations are nice, but if your budget is tight they aren’t a necessity.

Give the gift of time

If you know that other family members or friends are also looking for ways to save cash this Christmas, suggest service gifts or gifts of time. You can all volunteer at a homeless shelter, go Christmas caroling, or have a cookie baking party. The best part of the holidays is spending time with those we love!
